The director’s chair, recognisable by its folding frame and canvas seat, immediately evokes the world of cinema and show business. Yet its history dates back to Roman antiquity, and it has stood the test of time to become a symbol of elegance and comfort.

Ancient origins: inspiration from the Roman Empire

Folding chairs similar to the director’s chair already existed in the Roman Empire. The ‘curule’, a folding chair made of wood and leather, was used by Roman magistrates as a symbol of power. Its ease of transport and practicality made it a highly prized object of prestige.

The emergence of the modern director’s chair

It was in the early 20th century that the director’s chair acquired its iconic status. How is Azur Confort wooden outdoor furniture made?

At Azur Confort, each piece of furniture is the fruit of expertise, combining the meticulous work of craftsmen and the precision of machines. In our French factory, our team passionately transforms rough-cut wood into high-quality, durable outdoor furniture. Every stage of the process, from chopping the wood to final assembly, is meticulously carried out to guarantee unique pieces that are built to last. Here’s how our expert hands and tools craft furniture made to embellish your terraces and withstand outdoor environments.

Working with raw wood

It all starts with the raw wood we receive in blocks, which is worked to produce pieces ready for assembly.

Wood debiting

This first stage involves cutting the wood into planks of the right size for the furniture. The wood is sawn in such a way as to maximise its yield and limit material losses. The sections obtained are then sorted according to their quality and future use.

Planing and levelling

Once cut, the boards are planed to obtain perfectly straight surfaces and eliminate any irregularities in the raw wood. These steps ensure that the boards are of uniform thickness, which is essential for precise assembly and a meticulous finish.

Processing the pieces

This stage involves shaping the furniture elements to match the planned design. The pieces are drilled, grooved and milled to ensure a solid, harmonious assembly.

Assembling the furniture

Once the pieces have been machined, they are assembled by hand using traditional woodworking techniques. The pieces are sanded and the furniture inspected to obtain smooth surfaces, ready for the next stage and the application of finishes.

Colours and finishes

After mounting, the wood receives a special treatment to stain it and improve its durability against the elements.

The final application depends on the type of finish you choose when customising your furniture. We offer three different finishes:

  • Oiled finish: tints the wood while preserving its natural appearance.
  • Woodstain finish: protects the wood with a coating that partially covers the wood grain. Available in ‘wood’ and coloured shades.
  • Lacquer finish: adds colour and shine to furniture, exclusive to the ESTIU collection.

Assembling and packing

The fabrics are first cut and made by our own workshop and our local partners. Once ready, they are assembled with foam seats, mattresses or directly on the wooden structure, depending on the model manufactured.

Orders are then carefully packaged and prepared for dispatch to our customers or reseller partners.

What types of wood should you choose for sustainable outdoor furniture?

Since 2020, Azur Confort has taken the audacious step of abandoning exotic woods and turning exclusively to European species, which are more respectful of the environment. Discover the advantages and specific features of the five popular types of wood used for outdoor furniture, and why Robinia, Chestnut and Beech are sustainable alternatives to exotic species.

Exotic wood species: between resistance and environmental impact

Certain types of exotic wood, such as teak and acacia, are widely used for outdoor furniture because of their natural resistance to moisture and insects.

Teak

Emblematic of outdoor furniture, teak wood is appreciated for its density, durability and noble appearance. However, its exploitation poses serious environmental problems, in particular deforestation in South-East Asia and high carbon footprint transport by sea.

Iroko

Native to West and Central Africa, the iroko is a dense, durable wood, often compared to teak because of its resistance to weather and insects. Although it is more accessible than teak, its exploitation is responsible for the over-exploitation and deforestation of African forests.

Robinia: a sustainable European alternative

Native to Europe, Robinia (often called ‘false acacia’) is one of the most durable woods for outdoor use. It is naturally resistant to weather, fungi and insects, without the need for chemical treatments.

What ‘sustainable furniture’ means for Azur Confort ?

High-quality materials

Materials play an important role in the durability of furniture. At Azur Confort, we make outdoor furniture for professionals. This implies two things: our furniture must be resistant to outdoor conditions (rain, snow, sun), and suitable for intensive use.

But when it comes to materials, the word sustainability takes on another meaning: environmental responsibility. The manufacture of furniture has a high environmental cost, which we don’t think about at first glance. In addition to the manufacture of the furniture, we have to take into account the culture of the wood, its impact on deforestation, the energy resources needed to harvest and transport it…

In 2020, we decided to abandon the use of exotic woods from Africa and Asia, and concentrate instead on Robinia and Chestnut, two species that are native to Europe and grown locally. Less popular than teak or iroko, but just as suitable for outdoor use.

Repairing rather than throwing away

Repairability plays a major role in the design of our furniture. Most of our textiles are replaceable, meaning that worn-out fabrics can be replaced with new ones, while keeping the same wooden structure. And if a wooden part should break, we are able to re-use the undamaged parts to make a new piece of furniture, thus avoiding throwing away the furniture because of a single defective part.

As well as repairs, we also offer furniture refurbishment. Wood is a living material, and furniture ages and develops a patina throughout its life. Greyed-out wood doesn’t have to be thrown away! Maintenance and the application of a new finish to the wood will ensure that the furniture lives for many years to come.
